چکیده

Case 3 is a rare congenital abnormality of the inner ear which usually presents as recurrent meningitis. This abnormality is now well documented.4 It should be suspected as a cause of recurrent meningitis in a child who has a sensorineural deafness. The presence of fluid behind the tympanic membrane should make one suspicious and the diagnosis can be confirmed by tomograms of the inner ear. The CSF fistula is from the fundus of the internal auditory canal into the vestibule of the inner ear and from there into the middle ear through a defect in the stapes footplate. The simplest and safest way to close this defect is through the middle ear. A fluid level behind the tympanic membrane is usually due to secretory otitis media. In patients with meningitis or CSF rhinorrhoea, the possibility that the fluid in the middle ear may be CSF should be considered. We thank our neurosurgical colleagues for referring these cases.

Effect of Stabilizing Endotracheal Tube on Quality of Airway Management in Patients Hospitalized in ICU

Background: The unplanned departure of endotracheal tube is one of the main complications for endotracheal intubation. In addition to endotracheal extubation, its movement can also lead to damage to the oral cavity. Stabilizing endotracheal tube is the most important factor that can prevent unplanned departure of endotracheal tube as well as its movement. The current study was done with the aim...

A Comparison of the Haider Tube-Guard® Endotracheal Tube Holder Versus Adhesive Tape to Determine if This Novel Device Can Reduce Endotracheal Tube Movement and Prevent Unplanned Extubation

BACKGROUND Endotracheal tube security is a critical safety issue. We compared the mobility of an in situ endotracheal tube secured with adhesive tape to the one secured with a new commercially available purpose-designed endotracheal tube-holder device (Haider Tube-Guard). We also observed for the incidence of oropharyngeal or facial trauma associated with the 2 tube fixation methods. METHODS ...

Endotracheal tube extubation force: adhesive tape versus endotracheal tube holder.

BACKGROUND Adhesive tape is commonly used to secure the endotracheal tube (ETT) in anesthesia and intensive-care settings. OBJECTIVE To determine the force required to extubate when the ETT is secured with adhesive tape or commercially available ETT holders. METHODS We orally intubated a simulation manikin with a standard 8.0-mm inner-diameter ETT, inflated the cuff to 20 cm H(2)O, and mea...

Best Method for Securing an Endotracheal Tube.

CEN, CFRN, CPEN, and Tom Pietrantonio, BSRT, RRT-RCP, reply: In a study published in Respiratory Care, Shimizu et al3 concluded that the conventional adhesive tape methods had greater extubation force than the 2 endotracheal tube holders and that extubation force varies considerably depending on the width, length, and type of adhesive tape used. Mohammed and Hassan4 studied endotracheal tube sl...

Comparative assessment of the effects of securing endotracheal tube with endotracheal tube holder devices and the routine method on the quality of airway care in the intensive care unit

Background: Mechanical Ventilation in the intensive care unit is one of the most important interventions. Artificial airways are used to facilitate ventilation and endotracheal tubes are usually used for this matter. Unplanned extubation is one of the major complications of oral endotracheal intubation. In addition to extubation , tube movement can also cause trauma to oral cavity. Stabilizing ...
